How to do dreadlocks on kinky hair?

Maybe you want to do Dreadlocks, but you sure don’t know where to start.

This is why I wrote this article simply to show you how to do it with simple steps to follow.

  • SLOW METHOD

First, let’s start with the slow but also “sloppy” method that works but takes a very long time.

What is the neglect method?

This is how the “cavemen” made dreadlocks, just not doing anything to their hair.

Now there are new ways to do them because this method takes time. In addition it seems that it leaves dandruff!

Well let me tell you, it can take a while but it depends on the hair of each person.

It will also allow you to start dreads the easy way without going to a hairdresser.

I used this method and it doesn’t prevent people telling me that I have pretty dreadlocks 🙂

The story of dandruff, so if you leave your hair like that without washing it, you will be disappointed!

It takes a minimum of care.

GET STARTED (THE BASE)

To be able to make Dreadlocks you need a certain length of hair.

And yes you will not have results if you have a zero ball.

Personally I started my Dreadlocks with about 10cm of hair which was not a lot but enough to start.

If you don’t want your Dreads to be compared to the fries at the local McDonald’s, be patient!

Before making my vanilla:

When I made my vanillas:

Condition of my hair when my vanillas started to form dreads:

  • Make yourself some vanilla

Obviously you won’t have Dreadlocks overnight, you have to make some vanilla first.

This is an afro-type hairstyle made with natural or artificial (synthetic) hair.

To do it you simply need:

  • Insulate a fairly thick wick (about the thickness of your thumb, see a little thicker) and separate it into two identical sections.

  • Make your twist, that is, you just need two strands that are rolled separately on themselves, in the same direction and then together around each other. The operation is performed on the entire hair.

When you do this, you still need to tighten the bits a minimum so that they can hold well.

Vanilla is widely used for the start of dreadlocked hairstyles.

Made with natural hair, they are more likely than braids to turn into locks. Vanilla is actually a compromise between dreadlocks and pigtails.

This means that you must at all costs avoid starting from Locks by having made mats.

What are mats?

Take a good look, if you find among the three women below those who wear braids, I will give you in my next articles all my tips and magic potions to have Dreadlocks that grow well.

Yes I’m sure you’ve found it, perfect!

Why avoid this?

If you want to have flat, charmless Dreadlocks then I suggest you do this.

No more seriously you should not do it because it makes sense to have beautiful round Dreadlocks you have to make vanilla because we find this rounded shape.

There, you will tell me indeed it is logical but not necessarily for certain.

Let me tell you the story of a friend of mine who decided to let his hair grow out and only made pigtails.

He let it grow well until the day he wanted to do Locks, knowing that he could remove the mats and make vanilla, he continued on this momentum and the result is that he ended up cutting everything and starting over.

  • Dread maintenance

Avoid touching them too much as you risk undoing them!

When you sleep I advise you to tie them but also to put on a nightcap, especially if you move a lot while you sleep!

I still advise you to wash your hair without forcing too much (with delicacy), shampooing a week is enough.

  • Wait

So waiting is a step?

YES and this is normal.

The training of dreadlocks takes a long time, personally I had to wait at least seven months to have well formed locks.

However, it also depends on the hair of the person in question. It can therefore take more or less time to form.

If you are not patient I prefer to warn you, let it go.

NO THIS IS FALSE you should never give up, you will still need motivation and I am counting on you.

Of course some people may laugh at you because you will not immediately have the result you want but, believe me the path is worth it!

For impatient people like me you will even tend to play in your hair and check your dreads for a few inches per day.

QUICK METHOD

This method can be used for frizzy hair as well as straight hair.

WITH THE CREAMING COMB

What is that?

First of all, the backcombing comb gives volume to certain areas of the hair. it can be used for straight hair, as for frizzy hair.

In our case we will use it to create our dreadlocks quickly and efficiently.

  • Start by delineating your square. This means that you will divide your scalp into boxes of equal size. The bigger your square, the more likely you will be to get big locks.

I advise you to make a medium square because your dreadlocks will tend to swell or on the contrary to shrink which can cause problems later.

  • Take this famous lock of hair and start backcombing by combing in the direction of the skull. That is to say that you will simply do as you untangle your hair but in the opposite direction (from the end of the strand to the root).

Start doing this gesture around 2 cm from your head after 4 cm and so on. You have to do it in stages until you reach the end of the wick.

  • Tamp the knots you get, especially at the root.

By repeating this action several times you should see hair tangling on all sides.

Ps: I advise you to get help if you are not comfortable.

Once your wick is tangled, you must have a hook as below, a hook with a spike may also be sufficient.

By reproducing back and forth, you will be able to solidify your wick twice as much and recover the hair that goes in all directions.

When you do this, you carry it from your head to the end of your wick.

We will call hair that goes in any direction “fuss”.

So once the maximum fuss is pretty much tangled in your dreadlocks you can move on to the next step.

  • Use the locking wax as well as the gel fast locks in addition

Use the YARI gel only to fix the “frills” to your head for a clean finish.

That is to say, flatten the hair that forms the contour of your hair.

You can use it when you need to do a pretty hairstyle for a party or other event, the result will be super clean!

The locking wax just to strengthen your dreads, so that it does not untangle with the slightest drop of water.

In our case, you only use locking wax to solidify your dreads.

If you already have well formed dreads there is no point in purchasing this product.

And you can even use YARI gel which is very effective in both cases!
